Vending Machine Thefts Spike

Transactions can be made for snack foods, beverages and toiletries, without the need for human interaction. The simplicity of purchasing items through a machine, may seem like an easy shopping experience for the consumer. Yet, an increase in vending machine vandalism means more operators taking cautious measures in theft prevention.

Vending operators are getting creative in battling an increasingly prevalent problem. The industry has continued to face an uphill battle with theft, even amongst some of its employees who operate and manage the machines.

One solution for some operators is an investment in specialized wireless devices. The recent spike in vending machine vandalism may be partially attributed to the unemployment rate. Nonetheless, the theft of products from machines ends up hurting the bottom line of many operators. As a business that is mostly cash-based, tracking the movement of funds as it goes from mechanics to drivers can be a tricky process.

Cantaloupe Systems' wireless device, the Seed, is one solution. It lets operators efficiently track inventory and sales from a remote location. It transmits data in real time, and sends alerts to operators through email or text messages when there is unusual activity. The Seed also lets the owner of a device set a password for the locks on vending machines and restrict access.

Other security systems let operators keep an eye on individual machines online, and simultaneously monitor total sales and inventory.

The management of vending machine sales and inventory has become widely automated. While it may be easier to keep popular items in stock, theft and vandalism has plagued the billion dollar industry. With increased awareness about wireless monitoring technology, operators have a better chance of combatting potential losses in sales and property.
